From the beginning of his professional career to the present, he has been the responsible executor and leader of numerous scientific research works on reinforced concrete and masonry structures of buildings and constructions, including the study of methods for applying multi leaf (hollow) masonry wall constructions in seismic zones.

In 2000, he analysed the consequences of the earthquake that occurred in Baku, led the engineering inspections of dozens of buildings along with the development of recommendations regarding their reinforcement.

Under the leadership of A. Garayev, engineering inspection works were carried out on numerous buildings in the city of Baku, as well as in other regions and cities of the Republic, including the buildings of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, Museum of Art named after R. Mustafayev, Cultural Centre named after Shahriyar, the administrative building of SOCAR, “Nizami” cinema, and others. Based on the results obtained, projects for the reinforcement, restoration, and reconstruction of buildings were developed.

A. Garayev worked on construction projects of 10–18-storey buildings in Baku and Aktau, Kazakhstan, and participated in the development of special technical conditions for the design and construction of residential and administrative buildings in Azerbaijan with a height of 75 m and more.

A. Garayev, one of the authors of the reconstruction of the former “Goy-Gol” hotel, was a laureate of the VI International Competition of the International Union of Architects Association in 1998.

For the first time in the Republic of Azerbaijan, the normative document AzDTN 2.3-1 “Construction in Seismic Regions” was developed under his leadership.

The results of these studies have been reflected in up to 50 scientific articles published in various symposium and conference proceedings, as well as in scientific journals.

A. Garayev has been the editor-in-chief of the scientific-practical journal “Construction and Architecture in Azerbaijan” since 2014 and a member of the editorial board of the “Bulletin of Construction Techniques” journal published in Moscow, a corresponding member of the International Academy of Architecture (Moscow) and a member of the Union of Architects of Azerbaijan.

Abdi Garayev was awarded the “Progress” medal for his services in the development of construction complex in the country.
